Manufacture of Crude Palm Oil and Refined Palm Oil

  • What is crude palm oil (CPO)?
  • Crude palm oil (CPO) is obtained from the fruit of the oil palm tree (Elaeis guineensis). The oil is rich in palmitic acid, β-carotene and vitamin E. CPO has been fractionated mainly into liquid palm olein and solid palm stearin in order to diversify its food applications.
  • What is the production process of crude palm oil (CPO)?
  • The production process of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) encompasses several essential stages. It begins with the cultivation of oil palm trees in suitable tropical regions. These trees take approximately three to four years to mature and start bearing fruit.
  • How do you extract CPO from palm oil?
  • Once the oil palm fruits, known as fresh fruit bunches (FFBs), reach the desired level of ripeness, they are carefully harvested. The FFBs are then swiftly transported to palm oil mills, where the extraction process takes place. At the palm oil mill, the FFBs undergo a series of processes to extract the valuable CPO.
  • Why is CPO called red palm oil?
  • CPO is also called red palm oil because of its high content of carotenoids. It is a rich source of vitamin E (600–1000 ppm); coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) (18–25 mg/kg) and sterols (325–365 mg/kg) (Tyagi & Vasishtha, 1996).
