Manufacture of Crude Palm Oil and Refined Palm Oil

Angola’s Recurring Oil Challenges in a New Context

Angola: New Refinery to be Built in Soyo Energy Capital

  • How is refined palm oil produced?
  • To produce refined palm oil (RPO), the objectionable impurities in the CPO are removed to obtain the required levels using two main methods: chemical or alkali refining and physical refining methods. Either of these is followed by fractionation as a final purification process to separate the oil into stearin and olein components.
  • What is crude palm oil refining?
  • To prevent iron oxidation, the storage tank is lined in a suitable protective coating. The oil at this stage is called the crude palm oil (CPO). The aim of refining is to convert the CPO to quality edible oil by removal of objectionable impurities to the desired levels in the most efficient manner.
  • Does Angola have a refinery?
  • Angola has only one operational refinery, Refinária de Luanda (Sonarel), which was built prior to Angolan independence. With a processing capacity of approximately 57,000 bpd, it is inadequate for Angola’s domestic needs, fulfilling only around one fifth of demand, and unable to manage processing for export.
  • Will Angola build a third largest oil refinery in Soyo by 2024?
  • The Quantem consortium, which comprises American companies TGT, Quantem, Aurum & Sharp and the Angolan company Atis-Nebest will invest $3.5 million-dollars to build Angola’s third largest oil refinery in Soyo by 2024. Once completed, the refinery is expected to process 100,000 oil barrels per day (bpd).
