Compressor oils are the most important lubricants to lubricate the main parts of this machine family under more or less severe conditions. The basic types of compressors are displacement compressors and dynamic compressors. In displacement compressors, the gaseous medium is drawn into a chamber, compressed and expelled by a reciprocating piston.
How oil is injected into a rotary piston compressor?
The oil injected into oil-cooled screw and rotary piston compressors is always removed from the compressed air. The oil which is mixed with the highly compressed air is removed and collected in single or multistage oil separators. Before the oil is recirculated, it is filtered and cooled.
What lubricant should a reciprocating piston compressor use?
In general, reciprocating piston compressors need lubricants with higher viscosity (ISO VG 100 or ISO VG 150), extremely low carbon residues, and no or mild EP/AW-performance additives. Screw compressors need lubricants of lower viscosity (ISO VG 46 or 68) with excellent oxidation stability and mild/high AW/EP performance additives.
