Analysis of the feasibility of small-biomass power generation

  • What is palm oil mill effluent?
  • Throughout the milling process, biomass such as palm kernel shell (PKS), pressed empty fruit bunch (PEFB) and palm pressed fibre (PPF) are generated as by-products. Meanwhile, large amounts of strong wastewater, which is known as palm oil mill effluent (POME) are produced during sterilisation and clarification operations. Figure 1.
  • What factors affect the performance of a palm oil mill?
  • Although the milling process is well established in the industry, insufficient research and development reported in optimising and analysing the operations of a palm oil mill. The performance of a palm oil mill (e.g., costs, utilisation and flexibility) is affected by factors such as operating time, capacity and fruit availability.
  • How can a mill operator improve economic performance?
  • It is assumed that the mill operator is interested to further optimise the milling process to improve economic performance, EP by taking operational factors such as operating hours, labour costs and FFB availability into account.
  • Can palm oil mill effluent be converted into biogas?
  • However, along with its breakthrough, the generation of palm oil mill effluent (POME) as uncontrolled waste has become a serious matter and requires proper management to reduce its negative effects on the environment. Subsequently, the high organic content of POME makes it possible to convert waste into value-added products, such as biogas.
