Development of ultra‐high erucic acid oil in the industrial oil

  • What is erucic acid rapeseed oil?
  • Rapeseed oils rich in erucic acid (HEAR = high erucic acid rapeseed) are still used for technical purposes. In contrast, only rapeseed oils with very low levels of erucic acid (LEAR = low erucic acid rapeseed), which are considered toxicologically safe, are permitted for human consumption.
  • Does erucic acid cross with rapeseed?
  • Erucic acid is currently mainly derived from high erucic acid rapeseed (HEARs with ca. 50% of 22 : 1 in its seed oil). However, HEARs cross readily with the existing food oil rapeseed, and its seeds can be inadvertently mixed with food qualities, thus complicating the commercial production and supply of HEARs.
  • When were rapeseed oils introduced in Germany?
  • Thus, LEAR varieties were only introduced in Germany in the early 1970s. Since then, only rapeseed oils with a low erucic acid concentration have been available on the German food market. The high proportion of rapeseed oils with very low erucic acid concentrations reflects the successful breeding of LEAR varieties.
  • Is rapeseed oil a monounsaturated fatty acid?
  • Traditional rapeseed oil contains high levels of erucic acid (EA), a monounsaturated fatty acid with a carbon chain length of 22 (Downey 1963; Harvey and Downey 1964). In the 1960s, Canada initiated the breeding of rapeseed varieties with reduced EA and glucosinolate content (Gupta and Pratap 2007).
