  • Where does palm oil come from?
  • Palm oil is a valuable product used all over the world as part of a vast number of products used daily in the biofuels, agri-food and body care sectors (Mutsaers, 2019). It is the major source of vegetable oil produced mainly in Indonesia and Malaysia (Villela et al., 2014).
  • When did palm oil become a commercial crop?
  • In terms of large-scale commercial production, however, oil palm is a relatively recent crop that only emerged into global prominence later in the twentieth century, with an almost linear rise from 1990 to the early 2000s, followed by a plateau after 2007 (Malaysian Palm Oil Production by Year 2020).
  • What is oil palm used for?
  • Background Oil palm, Elaeis guineensis, is by far the most important global oil crop, supplying about 40% of all traded vegetable oil. Palm oils are key dietary components consumed daily by over three billion people, mostly in Asia, and also have a wide range of important non-food uses including in cleansing and sanitizing products.
  • What is palm oil mill effluent (POME) & empty fruit bunch (EFB)?
  • From mill operations alone, palm oil mill effluent (POME) and empty fruit bunch (EFB) accounted for up to 80% (wet basis) of the total mill residues. Malaysia produces approximately 53 million cubic meters of POME annually and typical treatment processes using open ponds are inadequate to cope with this amount efficiently.
