Improving harvesting operations in an oil palm plantation

  • Does Colombia have an oil palm plantation?
  • This plantation has one of the longest cableway systems for an oil palm plantation in Colombia with over 100 km and eight aerial tractors operating to evacuate the FFB (see Fig. 17 a). The plantation is divided into 87 land plots with three sowing years, namely, 2009, 2010, and 2011 (see Fig. 17 b).
  • Where are oil palm plantations located?
  • In 2010 oil palm made up 2.6% of the agricultural GDP and 0.22% of total GDP ( MADR, 2011 ). Oil palm plantations are located in four zones: north, central, eastern and the western zones ( Fig. 1 ). The eastern zone has the most plantations and contributes 39.1% of the area planted with oil palm.
  • Why is oil palm important in Colombia?
  • In Colombia, oil palm has become an important sector to improve the economy in rural areas ( Girón-Amaya et al., 2020 ). The eastern zone of Colombia has the largest oil palm plantation area and is targeted for future oil palm expansion ( Girón-Amaya et al., 2022 ).
  • How to model future expansion of oil palm plantations?
  • To model future expansion, we started with a map of oil palm plantations in 2008. An econometric model that incorporates the impact of governmental policies (normative and economic that support the biofuel sector) through a Time Series Intervention Model Analysis was used to estimate the cultivated area in 2020.
