Critical evaluation of oil palm fresh fruit bunch solid wastes

Application of simulation in process improvement of palm oil mill FFB

  • How is palm oil produced?
  • Palm oil is produced by processing oil palm fresh fruit bunch (FFB), which leads to the generation of FFB solid wastes. Notable FFB solid wastes are empty fruit bunch (EFB), mesocarp fibre (MF), and palm kernel shell (PKS) while palm oil mill effluent is the liquid wastes (Fig. 1).
  • How much FFB does a palm oil mill consume a year?
  • The mill consumes 200,805 tonnes FFB annually and operates for approximately 4351 h. The POM consists of three main sections: a palm oil milling plant, a steam cogeneration plant, and a biogas power plant.
  • What is the difference between FFB and PK in palm oil?
  • In the palm oil industry, fresh fruit bunch (FFB) is first harvested in oil palm plantation and sent to palm oil mill (POM) to produce CPO. On the other hand, the generated palm kernel (PK) is sent to kernel crushing plant for production of crude palm kernel oil (CPKO).
  • How much EFB can a palm oil plant produce?
  • The capacity of the HTC plant is dependent on the amount of EFB produced by the palm oil mill it is attached to. Palm oil mill capacities typically lie in the range of 20–90 tonnes of FFB per hour (based on data of 12 mills analyzed in ), resulting in 4-21 tonnes EFB per hour.
