  • Who owns Algeria's new oil refinery?
  • Algeria’s state-owned Sonatrach will be the owner and the operator of the £2.8bn ($3.68bn) oil refinery facility which is scheduled to start operations in the first half of 2024. The project’s construction work will be executed by a joint venture (JV) of Korea’s Samsung Engineering (45%) and Spanish firm Técnicas Reunidas (55%).
  • What projects have been commissioned in Algeria?
  • Several projects have been commissioned over the last three years, such as new gas fields in Tinhert, Gassi Touil and Berkine South, the gas boosting projects in Hassi R’Mel, Hamra and In Amenas, the new GR7 pipeline for gas transport from South-West fields, as well as an expansion of the Medgaz pipeline linking Algeria to Spain.
  • Does Algeria use natural gas?
  • Algeria relies on its own oil and natural gas production for domestic consumption, which is heavily subsidized. Natural gas and oil account for almost all of Algeria’s total primary energy consumption.
  • Who owns the hydrocarbon industry in Algeria?
  • Sonatrach owns more than 75% of total hydrocarbon production in Algeria, and IOCs account for the remaining 20%. The Hydrocarbon Act of 2005 governs Algeria's oil and natural gas industries. In 2013, Algeria revised parts of the hydrocarbon law in an attempt to attract foreign investors to new projects.
