A consortium of five Egyptian researchers has developed PalmFil, the world’s first high-performance fibers and reinforcements extracted from the byproducts of pruning date palms, such as fronds and fruit stalks, according to a press release from the PalmFil Consortium.
- How do you extract FFA from palm oil?
- Zahrina et al., used betaine monohydrate-based natural deep eutectic solvents in a molar ratio of 1:8 to extract FFA from palm oil at 40 °C ( Zahrina et al., 2018 ). That solvent had an efficiency of palmitic acid extraction about 34%, and the antioxidants were preserved in the refined palm oil up to 99%.
- Can process technologies improve the quality of palm oil produced?
- However, the process technologies and the quality of palm oil produced have remained stagnant for the past decades. This paper reviews the latest development in the process technologies that can be applied in the palm oil milling process to improve the sustainability and efficiency of palm oil production, as well as the quality of the oil produced.
- How does palmfil technology contribute to the circular bioeconomy?
- PalmFil technology contributes to the circular bioeconomy following a closed loop cycle from cradle to cradle. Moreover, the extraction technology could be applied to byproducts of other palm species such as oil palm, sugar palm, doum palm as well as other agriculture byproducts such as broomcorn.
- How is palm oil extracted?
- Palm oil is extracted from fresh fruit bunches (FFB) by a mechanical process, whereby a mill commonly handles 60 to 100 mt per hour of FFB. The palm oil mill of today is based predominantly on concepts developed in the early 1950s (Mongana Report). An average size FFB weighs about 20-30 kg and contains 1500-2000 fruits (Fig. 1).
