What is an oilseed press used for?
An oilseed press is used to separate oilseeds such as sunflowers, canola, and soybeans into oil and oilseed meal. Pumpkin or grape seeds and brazil nuts are examples of less common materials that can be pressed for their oil in these machines. The oil from the press is raw oil, and is used either as a food product or as an industrial product.

Industrial pressing of oilseeds is realized using continuous screw presses. The presses are fed with crude or pre-treated seeds. Types of pre-treatments (thermal pre-treatment, size reduction, mechanical sieving, etc.) differ for various seed species (Carr 1997). Each type of seed pre-treatment provides its own advantages.
What is the compression ratio of a seed press?
These forces are of two types: radial (thrust on the cage) and axial (taking forward the matter in the press) (Laisney 1984). The ratio of available volumes between inlet and outlet of the press V1 / V2 gives the compression ratio of the press. Ideally, this ratio should be around 4 to 4.5 for seed containing 50 % of oil.
