South Africa's soybean industry: A brief overview

  • Why is South Africa expanding its soybean industry?
  • The expansion of South Africa’s soybean industry is a success story that has led to more sustainable and profitable cultivation and crop rotation practices, processing capacity, and the substitution of imported soybean oil cake and oil with locally produced and processed products.
  • Does South Africa produce soybeans?
  • In fact, South Africa’s domestic soybean production is only a third of the country’s crushing capacity. In the 2016/2017 marketing season, South Africa’s soybean production is expected to decrease by 27% year-on-year, leaving room for increases in oilcake and oil imports.
  • Does South Africa still import soybean oil?
  • Despite the increasing levels of soybean production, South Africa still imports considerable volumes of soybean oilcake and oil, and there is still considerable scope for production increases in order to substitute these imports. In fact, South Africa’s domestic soybean production is only a third of the country’s crushing capacity.
  • Which countries have a potential for soybean production & use?
  • South Africa and Nigeria offer the best examples in SSA of the potential for soybean production and use. Soybean production has increased dramatically, from 84,000 t in 1987 to 1,320,000 t in 2016 in South Africa and from 40,000 t in 1987 to 680,000 t in 2016 in Nigeria ( Fig. 2 ). Fig. 1.
