We describe a novel process for extraction of tea oil preceded by tea saponin extraction from C. oleifera seed kernels. The extraction efficiency obtained with microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) is very high, which the recovery yield is up to 83% in 30 s and the saponins in camellia seed kernels can be completely removed by the second MAE.

Tea has a long history of medicinal and dietary use. Tea polysaccharide (TPS) is regarded as one of the main bioactive constituents of tea and is beneficial for health. Over
- How is tea saponin extracted?
- Current methods include water extraction, organic solvent extraction, precipitation, water extraction - alcohol precipitation, and ultrasonic assisted extraction methods (Fig. 3 d). The water extraction method is the earliest tea saponin extraction process adopted in China, which can obtain a recovery rate of 12–13%, and a purity of 70%.
- How is TPS extracted from tea residues?
- The MAE technique was used to extract TPS from tea residues of green, black and oolong teas with a solid-liquid ratio of 1:20, an extraction temperature of 200 to 230 °C, and an extraction time of 2 min, which resulted in the extraction of about 40 % of TPS from tea residues .
- Can novel processing technologies extract value-added compounds from tea leaves?
- In this review, the application of novel processing technologies for the extraction of value-added compounds from tea leaves is reviewed. The advantages and drawbacks of using these technologies are also highlighted. Tea (Camellia sinensis L.) is an ancient crop belonging to the Theaceae family.
- How effective is Mae in extracting bioactive compounds from green tea?
- Many researchers have reported that the MAE is more effective than the conventional extraction methods (e.g., solid–liquid extraction, extraction at room temperature, maceration, reflux extraction) in extracting bioactive compounds from green teas at ambient temperature [11, 37, 173].
