SAUDI ARABIA: PETROLEUM INDUSTRY REVIEW SAGE

Country Analysis Executive Summary : Saudi Arabia U.S.

  • Why is Saudi Arabia a major oil exporter?
  • Saudi Arabia is widely regarded as the world’s most important oil exporter. Through its own production and as the de facto leader of OPEC and OPEC+, Saudi Arabia can have more influence over international oil markets than most other producers – even countries that do not directly import Saudi oil are therefore affected by Saudi oil policy.
  • Does Saudi Aramco lift crude oil?
  • Saudi Aramco’s term clients for crude oil now exceed 50 and lift the bulk of the kingdom’s exports. Saudi Aramco only allows well established companies to buy its crudes and requires a commitment to lift a minimum volume for a year, or longer. During the term of the contract, liftings by the client are to be made each month and not intermittently.
  • Why is Saudi Arabia a major fuel supplier?
  • It is strong in mid-distillates and fuel oil, having the biggest share of the locally important diesel market. It supplies about half of the oil requirements of the industrial sector and is the main fuel supplier to the power plants. Its international clients include airline firms like Saudi, Kuwait Airways and Gulf Air.
  • How many oil and gas wells are there in Saudi Arabia?
  • There are less than 1,450 wells producing oil and gas. This is the lowest number in the world relative to the size of the kingdom’s production, the largest in the world, compared to more than 1,500 wells in Algeria which accounts for less than 10% of the Saudi Arabia’s capacity.
