Crude palm oil (CPO) import Refined palm oil (RPO) import % Change India is the largest importer of palm oil and accounts for about 18-20% of the global palm oil imports, as per industry sources. The total domestic palm oil consumption remains around ~8-9 million metric tonnes
India has ample refining capacities but does not produce much crude palm oil (CPO) to feed the refineries and is dependent on the world’s largest producers such as Malaysia

The traditional edible oil refining processes, including hydration degumming, alkaline refining, adsorption decolorization and distillation deodorization, are designed to remove these
The Crude Palm Oil Refinery follows three essential stages to eliminate impurities and colour pigments in the palm oil. Degumming is the first stage, where gum and fatty acid along with other impurities like trace mills, copper and iron etc. are separated by applying phosphoric acid.
- Where does palm oil come from?
- Disruption from Indonesia (Malaysia is the other source of palm oil) was particularly worrisome as palm oil, crude & refined account for roughly 62% of edible oil imports. While soybean oil, which is 22% of India’s edible oil imports, comes from Argentina and Brazil, sunflower oil (15% of edible oil imports) comes from Ukraine and Russia.
- How will domestic refiners of edible palm oil perform this fiscal?
- Revenues of domestic refiners of edible palm oil are expected grow by about a tenth this fiscal on steady demand and higher realisations, according to CRISIL Ratings. The operating profitability is seen rising 40-50 basis points (bps) to around 3.5 per cent owing to favourable prices and continuation of duty-free imports.
- Which country imports the most edible oil in India?
- Out of the total edible oil imports, palm oil constituted a major share of 56%, followed by 27% of soya oil and 16% of sunflower oil during 2020–21. Indonesia and Malaysia are India’s major palm oil suppliers; soya oil is imported from Argentina and Brazil, and sunflower oil from Ukraine and Argentina.
- How will Indian edible palm oil industry perform this fiscal?
- Along with steady volume increase, this will lead to Indian edible palm oil industry revenues rising by about 10 per cent this fiscal.” The operating margins of Indian refiners are set to improve 50 bps to 3.5 per cent on account of increased economies of scale, firm commodity hedging policies and continuation of duty-free imports of CPO.
