source of oil is copra as the climate is conducive to highly productive coconuts. Of the oil streams possible from coconuts, crude oil that has undergone simple extraction of
cut-up and dried endosperm of the coconut, the copra, is pressed to produce the oil. Fresh copra is dried, pressed, and the oil is subsequently refined. It can only be used as an

The resulting byproduct of coconut oil production is copra meal (CM), interchangeably referred to as “copra cake” or “de-oiled copra”. The remaining oil content in the product, which amounts to approximately 7% oil
By reducing the number of energy-draining steps and equipment involved in pressing this versatile fruit, coconut oil manufacturers can streamline the process. With decades of experience pressing this tough nut
- Will copra be a new raw material?
- If, however, an existing oil mill is to diversify to include copra as new raw material, only minor equipment changes are needed. By 1980, copra will almost disappear as an export item, because the coconut producing countries will press and extract coconut oil domestically.
- What is copra oil?
- Copra oil is the crude oil produced by drying coconuts followed by mechanical expulsion that produces yellowish oil. This production method of oils from dry coconut is referred to as dry processing. It is an inexpensive method and is mainly done in India and Sri Lanka. The production of copra oil is described in Sect. 6.3.
- What is a copra drying program?
- The program involved a review of the supply chain from coconut handling through the cutting, drying, pressing and filtering of extracted oil. Of particular focus was the copra drying process which is commonly the source of discolouration in the oil and the stale or off flavours in the final product.
- How is copra oil processed?
- The yellowish crude copra oil produced from copra processing is subjected to various downstream processing steps such as refining, bleaching, and deodourisation processes to obtain colorless oil known as refined coconut oil. The refining of copra oil to Refined Bleached Deodourised (RBD) oil is described in Sect. 6.5.
