What Is Expeller Pressed Canola Oil?

Understanding Expeller-Pressed Oils in Food Manufacturing

  • What is expeller pressed canola oil?
  • Expeller pressed canola oil is oil that has been physically squeezed out of the seeds of the canola plant, using a machine known as an ‘expeller press’, as opposed to being solvent extracted. This oil comes at a premium price, because the expeller production process is more time consuming and expensive.
  • Is canola oil expeller pressed or non-GMO?
  • If the description of your oil says 'canola oil' on the label with no mention of expeller pressing or non-GMO, it’s almost certain that you are buying conventional canola oil. Expeller pressing uses a press to physically squeeze the oil out of the seed, rather than use chemicals.
  • How is canola oil extracted?
  • Unlike expeller pressed oils, regular “plain old” canola oil is taken out of the seeds of the canola plant through solvent extraction. Oil molecules are naturally found inside the canola seeds, and the oil has to be removed in some way. There are two possible ways to do this:
  • Is expeller pressed canola oil good for cancer survivors?
  • "As a cancer survivor, I try to limit GMOs in my diet. Fortunately, it's easy to find organic, expeller-pressed canola oil," says Jean LaMantia, RD. Expeller-pressed canola oil may contain fewer trans fats because of how the oil is processed, per the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
