  • Should maize production increase three-fold in Sub-Saharan Africa?
  • Maize production must increase three-fold in sub-Saharan Africa to meet the needs of future generations. Sustainably increasing maize production will require a portfolio of complementary technologies and policies. In this review we highlight four challenges to achieve this improvement.
  • How much maize is traded internationally?
  • 173 M t of maize being traded internationally (export basis) against a global production of 1,137 M t (TE2019). This compares to 189 M t traded for wheat, the most widely traded crop – but representing 25% given production of 757 M t (see Table 1; FAOStat, 2021).
  • How has maize production changed since 1961?
  • Since 1961, maize production on a global scale has increased from 205 M tons to 1145 M tons (FAO, 2021). The area under maize production increased by 187% and maize yields have increased almost three-fold. However, this figure masks important regional variation.
  • Why is maize a global agri-food system?
  • Since its domestication some 9,000 years ago, maize (Zea mays L.; corn) has played an increasing and diverse role in global agri-food systems. Global maize production has surged in the past few decades, propelled by rising demand and a combination of technological advances, yield increases and area expansion.
