Can Nigeria regain its status as a major palm oil

RSPO Principles & Criteria (P&C) interpreted for Nigeria

  • Why is palm oil important in Nigeria?
  • Oil palm dominates global oil production, trade, and consumption. Nigeria is one of the leading palm oil producers and consumers. A significant challenge of the palm oil industry is to reduce the environmental impacts (e.g. pollution and carbon footprint) and integrate a circular economy in operation.
  • How much palm oil does Nigeria produce?
  • For instance, palm and palm kernel oil represent 70% of Nigeria’s total domestic vegetable oil supply (Nzeka, 2014). In 2018, Nigeria produced more palm oil (one million tonnes) than other countries globally, except for Columbia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia (FAOSTAT, 2021), which amounted to over 64 million tonnes in total.
  • Why is Okomu certified by RSPO?
  • Okomu's palm oil is now marketed to the world as sustainable, conflict-free, and produced in harmony with local communities because it is certified by the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil). However, Van Oijen noted that the certification process is symbolic of the RSPO’s systemic weaknesses.
  • What is sustainable palm oil certification (RSPO)?
  • Schmidt and Rosa (2020) reported that the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil certification (RSPO) of bleached and deodorised palm oil could lead to multiple benefits, including less land-use change, GHG emissions reduction, peat soil conservation, and more biogas captured from POME.
