Oil and Gas Discoveries Spark Debate in the Democratic Republic of Congo

  • Why is the Democratic Republic of Congo experiencing a general energy crisis?
  • The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is currently experiencing a general energy crisis due to the lack of proper investment and management in the energy sector. Some 93.6% of the country is highly dependent on wood fuel as main source of energy, which is having severe impacts such as deforestation and general degradation of the environment.
  • Why is the Democratic Republic of Congo auctioning off oil blocks?
  • Last month, the Democratic Republic of Congo approved the auctioning off of 16 oil blocks, at least nine of which are in the fragile peatland ecosystem of the Cuvette Centrale. The auction aims to increase government revenue and boost domestic production of oil from its current modest level of 25,000 barrels per day.
  • Are oil exploration blocks a threat to Congo's environment?
  • The Democratic Republic of Congo is putting 16 oil exploration blocks up for auction, including nine in the peatlands of the Cuvette Centrale. Environmentalists warn that oil exploration and infrastructure for production could release huge amounts of carbon stored in the peatland and threaten the rights of local communities.
  • Will Congo expand oil drilling?
  • The central African nation of Congo is known for its mineral riches. Now the country is looking to expand the oil drilling that so far has taken place only in its far west and off its Atlantic coastline. (AP video: Nqobile Ntshangase/Sebabatso Mosamo)
