  • What is winterization & dewaxing?
  • Winterisation is another name to the process of dewaxing. The name winterization appears as during winter when the temperature is low, waxes present in the oil crystallizes, they give hazy appearance to the oil. Some oils are dewaxed before packing so as to remove waxes, which are dissolved in the oil.
  • Is dewaxing required for edible oil refining?
  • Dewaxing may be the fifth process considered for the edible oil refining. It is not a compulsory process and it is not required for every type of oil. Dewaxing is performed only for high wax containing oils such as Sunflower Oil, Rice Bran Oil, Corn Oil etc.
  • What is a winterization process?
  • The process of winterization consists of fractional crystallization of oils and fats followed by the separation of solids to make high quality salad oils. To design a winterization process, the rate of cooling of oil, the temperature of crystallization and the mobility of triglyceride molecules in the oil mass are crucial.
  • Does dewaxing precede deodorization in oil refining?
  • Since deodorization is usually the last step in oil refining, dewaxing tends to precede deodorization but not necessarily. Dewaxing can also be combined with bleaching and thus save on a filtration step (Anghelescu et al. 1986).
