The yellowish crude copra oil produced from copra processing is subjected to various downstream processing steps such as refining, bleaching, and deodourisation processes to obtain colorless oil known as refined coconut oil.
The dry residue left after extraction of virgin coconut oil still contains small amounts of oil and therefore taken to solvent extraction plant for obtaining the residual coconut oil. More commonly, the dry copra is first

Nigeria, Africa's top crude oil producer, depends on imported refined petroleum for domestic use due to the long-standing suboptimal performance of its four petroleum refineries (Olujobi,
The second case of in-house recycling in a refinery and petrochemical complex is the used water treatment and recycling system developed by VA TECH WABAG for the Dangote oil refinery in the Lekki Free Zone, Nigeria. This facility is still under construction (Fig. 16) with mechanical completion and subsequent start-up planned for 2022.
- How is copra oil processed?
- The yellowish crude copra oil produced from copra processing is subjected to various downstream processing steps such as refining, bleaching, and deodourisation processes to obtain colorless oil known as refined coconut oil. The refining of copra oil to Refined Bleached Deodourised (RBD) oil is described in Sect. 6.5.
- What is copra oil?
- Copra oil is the crude oil produced by drying coconuts followed by mechanical expulsion that produces yellowish oil. This production method of oils from dry coconut is referred to as dry processing. It is an inexpensive method and is mainly done in India and Sri Lanka. The production of copra oil is described in Sect. 6.3.
- How copra is used in coconut oil production?
- Special attention is given to copra drying methods and by-product utilization in the coconut oil production process. Copra, the dried product of coconut kernels, undergoes a crucial process of moisture reduction to enhance oil concentration and facilitate easy oil extraction from the coconut seeds.
- How is dry copra extracted?
- More commonly, the dry copra is first extracted by the solvent-free method using expellers to obtain better quality coconut oil. Then the residue is processed through solvent extraction plant using food-grade hexane as a solvent to extract the residual coconut oil (8 to 12%). Dry copra may be extracted directly in solvent extraction plants.
