  • What is palm oil mill effluent?
  • The palm oil milling process generates a considerable amount of solid-liquid effluent, which is collectively known as the palm oil mill effluent (POME). The three major sources of POME are the steriliser condensate from the steam steriliser, the sludge effluent from the oil-sludge separator and the wastewater produced from the hydrocyclone.
  • How do palm oil mills extract CPO?
  • Two common methods to extract CPO by the mills are either using a dry or wet process. The most common method used is the wet process which involves a large amount of water and steam in the process to remove dirt and to sterilize the fruit bunch in different steps, thus generating a high volume of effluent termed as palm oil mill effluent (POME).
  • How does palm oil milling work?
  • The digestion and pressing stations represent the core of the palm oil milling process, where palm oil is extracted from the fruits. Fruitlets, which have undergone sterilization, are conveyed to vertical cylindrical digesters where they are heated by steam and mashed by stirring arms.
  • How palm oil is processed after harvesting?
  • After the harvesting process, FFB is collected and transported to the palm oil milling factories to be processed into crude palm oil. Fig. 1 shows the milling process flow of the crude palm oil production (Hosseini and Abdul Wahid, 2015).
