Managing waste in the emerging oil and gas

  • How do you dispose of used oil as a hazardous waste?
  • Disposal of used oil as a hazardous waste requires it to be incinerated at a temperature exceeding 1,473 K (1,200 °C) to ensure complete oxidation of PCBs, polychlorinated terphenyls (PCTs), and PAHs. Such disposal is mandatory in many countries if the amounts of certain contaminants in the used oil exceed predetermined levels.
  • What is used oil disposal?
  • Used oil disposal refers to non-reuse of the oil. Disposal options here include dumping on landfill, dust suppression, incineration, and any indiscriminate dumping. Indiscriminately disposed of used oil pollutes the environment and thereby poses a threat to public health.
  • Can waste oils be used as feedstock for recycling plants?
  • To avail adequate feedstock to recycling plants, waste oils have to be collected separately, where this is technically feasible; and waste oils are treated in accordance with waste hierarchy for protection of the environment and human health.
  • Is lubricating oil a hazardous waste?
  • One widespread potentially hazardous waste is lubricating oil. A measure of used oil’s threat to the environment can be demonstrated by the fact that only 1 l of used oil is enough to pollute a million liters of fresh water, i.e., one part of oil per one million parts of water can cause taste and odor problems in drinking water.
