- What is the Canadian refining industry?
- The Canadian refining industry plays a significant role in the country’s economy as it is responsible for processing crude oil into refined petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, and heating oil. Here are some important points to know about the Canadian refining industry:
- Where do Canadian refineries get their oil from?
- Refineries in Canada get most of their input oil from domestic production. In 2019, for example, approximately 1.72 million barrels a day of crude oil was shipped to Canadian refineries, a majority of which was from domestic sources.
- Should Canadian refineries replace foreign oil with Canadian oil?
- A recent study conducted by the Canadian Energy Research Institute (CERI) found that if refineries out east replaced all foreign oil with Canadian oil, it would reduce emissions by 6.2 per cent and save them tens of millions of dollars.
- How many refineries are there in Canada?
- Today there are 19 refineries producing petroleum products in Canada. However, due to expansions at the remaining refineries over the last decade, current refining capacity in Canada is greater than it was in the 1970s.
