- How much oil does Niger have?
- Niger’s oil reserves remain modest (see Table 2) compared to, say, neighbouring Nigeria’s 36.2 billion barrels or Angola’s 13.5 billion barrels ( World Bank, 2015 ). Now with a national budget enhanced by oil rents, the challenge lies in smart financial allocation coupled with sound investments.
- How many oil spills occur a day in the Niger Delta?
- The unfair regulatory frameworks allow oil and gas companies to get away with many cases of oil spills. NOSDRA estimated over 3203 oil spills occurred in the Niger Delta between 2006 and 2010, suggesting that within this time frame, there were at least two oil spills per day (Oriola, 2013).
- Are there any oil companies in Niger?
- There are two other oil companies which also operate on other blocks in Niger: the Sonatrach Group (SIPEX) and Savannah Energy. Both of them, in the active exploration phase, have made significant discoveries over the last three years – SIPEX on the Kafra block (on the Algerian border) and Savannah on R3 (acquired from CNPC).
- Can Niger benefit from its oil?
- Thus far, rentier behaviour has come in the way of enabling Niger to benefit from its oil as much as it could: politicians have been content with only receiving 12.5% of the profits from production in Agadem. Table 3. Niger’s share of production in the oil sector.
