  • Is linseed oil alkali refined?
  • Linseed oil dries relatively fast and produces a durable, flexible paint film. The term alkali refined, when used in relation to oils, refers to the way the oil is extracted from the seed and subsequently clarified. This article will describe the alkali refining process and how it produces a high quality oil for use in artist paints and mediums.
  • How is linseed oil purified?
  • The are many methods of refining or purifying linseed oil. Raw linseed oil is usually subjected to some form of heat-treatment (even so-called “cold-pressed” linseed oils), refinement with an inorganic alkali or acid, filtration, washing, dewaxing and bleaching.
  • How linseed oil is produced?
  • Blown linseed oil is produced by blowing air through the oil. The main characteristic of this oil is that no driers are added to the oil. Therefore the blowing usually has to be continued for a longer period until there is a pronounced rise in the viscosity (prepolymerization).
  • Can linseed oil be oxidized at 80 °C?
  • Linseed oil samples aged at 80 °C are investigated with TG in the work by Lazzari et al. , which shows exothermic oxidation processes of unsaturated fatty acids between 150 and 250 °C, oxidative decomposition between 250 and 400 °C and a complete volatilization after 400 °C.
