Palm Oil (Elaeis guineensis): A Journey through Sustainability

  • How much palm oil is produced in Indonesia?
  • In 2023/24, Indonesian production volume of palm oil amounted to 47 million metric tons. This is more than twice as much as the production volume in Malaysia, which had the second-highest production levels worldwide in that year. Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil commonly used for food products, detergents, and cosmetics.
  • Which countries produce the most palm oil?
  • Indonesia and Malaysia are the largest palm oil suppliers, collectively accounting for over 85 percent of the global production. Indonesia had, by far, the largest palm oil land usage in the world. It is the only country that has significantly increased the size of its palm oil forestry, which grew by almost 650 percent between 2000 to 2022.
  • How has palm oil changed over the years?
  • Between 1970 and 2020, the world’s production of palm oil increased by about 40 times. Global production went from only 2 million tonnes to around 80 million tonnes. The change in global production is shown in the chart.3 The story of palm oil is less about it as an isolated commodity and more about the rising demand for vegetable oils.
  • When did palm oil become a commercial crop?
  • In terms of large-scale commercial production, however, oil palm is a relatively recent crop that only emerged into global prominence later in the twentieth century, with an almost linear rise from 1990 to the early 2000s, followed by a plateau after 2007 (Malaysian Palm Oil Production by Year 2020).
