Abstract. Cocoa supports about 3.5 million people. Farmers produce each year 1.5 million ton. This performance hides production constraints, the most is climate variability.
Cote d’Ivoire’s population is likely to continue growing for the foreseeable future because almost 60% of the populace is younger than 25, the total fertility rate is holding steady at about 3.5 children per woman,
- Is cocoa cultivation causing forest loss in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana?
- Our results suggest that cocoa cultivation is an underlying driver of over 37% of forest loss in protected areas in Côte d’Ivoire and over 13% in Ghana, and that official reports substantially underestimate the planted area (up to 40% in Ghana).
- What is the cocoa supply chain in Côte d'Ivoire?
- More generally, the Cocoa supply chain in Côte d’Ivoire is composed of a large number of producers i.e. farmers who sell Cocoa beans through three types of marketing channels: Farmers → Private buyers (pisteurs) → Traders (traitants) → Exporters and/or Processing companies (Grinders).
- How many cocoa-planted areas are in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana?
- We found a total cocoa-planted area of >1.5 Mha located in protected areas: 1.3 Mha in Côte d’Ivoire (30% of the total cocoa area of the country) and 0.2 Mha in Ghana (7% of the total cocoa area). These numbers correspond to >13.6% of the overall protected area in Côte d’Ivoire (9.8 Mha) and >4.5% in Ghana (3.7 Mha).
- Is there a simulation model of cocoa supply chain in Côte d'Ivoire?
- Due to the complex nature of the logistics of Cocoa supply chain, the only approach that enables to assess all important aspects and the variability of the supply chain is simulation. In this paper, a simulation model of the logistics of Cocoa supply chain in Côte d’Ivoire is developed, which can be also used as a decision-support tool.
