Coconut Oil: Chemistry, Production and Its

  • How is dry copra extracted?
  • More commonly, the dry copra is first extracted by the solvent-free method using expellers to obtain better quality coconut oil. Then the residue is processed through solvent extraction plant using food-grade hexane as a solvent to extract the residual coconut oil (8 to 12%). Dry copra may be extracted directly in solvent extraction plants.
  • How to extract oil from copra?
  • For the extraction of oil from copra the common method still prevailing in our country is by using rotary chucks. But the efficient system of extraction of oil is by the use of expellers. Well dried copra with a moisture content not exceeding 6 per cent is cleaned well from any foreign matter.
  • How copra is used in coconut oil production?
  • Special attention is given to copra drying methods and by-product utilization in the coconut oil production process. Copra, the dried product of coconut kernels, undergoes a crucial process of moisture reduction to enhance oil concentration and facilitate easy oil extraction from the coconut seeds.
  • How is copra oil processed?
  • The yellowish crude copra oil produced from copra processing is subjected to various downstream processing steps such as refining, bleaching, and deodourisation processes to obtain colorless oil known as refined coconut oil. The refining of copra oil to Refined Bleached Deodourised (RBD) oil is described in Sect. 6.5.
